Hi Beth, In addition to what Paulina says about the blood work, I'd recommend you take our free anxiety test, (see link to it at the left of the page)orint it out and take it with you. If you do see a clinic doctor, the anxiety test results may influence him or her more to refer you to a therapist who specializes in anxiety disorders. If you look at our Outside Resources and at the AADA link, you can probably locate specialists in your area. That would also give you a starting point for referral. All the best. Let us know how it turns out.

Hi, Beth! Usually, we go to a regular doctor first and rule out anything physical that could be going on. Some illnesses can cause panic attacks...like thyroid conditions. So, usually, bloodwork is run to rule these things out. Then, if it comes back good (which it usually does), make an appointment to see a psychiatrist if you want medication and also a pyschologist or counselor for the counseling end of it (which is very important). I hope this helps you! :)

Hi everyone. Im 23 and suspect that I have panic disorder. I'm nervous throughout the entire day, and then have panic attacks at least once a month. This has lasted at least 3 years. I'd like to get this diagnosed and treated but i'm not sure where I should go. I don't have a regular doctor. My family always said that if your leg didn't fall off then you had no reason to go to the doctor. Whenever I get really sick I just go to one of those clinics with rotating doctors or to the emergency room if it's bad enough. I just moved to a new city 3 weeks ago and i'm finally ready to get this taken care of. So my question is should I call a general practioner, a psychologist, a psychiatrist or what? Everything i've been reading online says a "healthcare professional" but which kind? Do you just call up a psychologist or psychiatrist and tell them you think you have panic disorder and make an appointment or do you need some sort of referal from a regular doctor first? Thanks for any help you guys can give me. I'd REALLY appreciate it and best of luck to everyone with their recovery.
