Sunny & Josie,
Since the norm is infrequent contact and I haven't seen my friend for years, I'll send a Christmas card with a note mentioning my concern.  It would be difficult since this is the first Christmas without the surviving parent.

Do you talk with this friend regularly?

Do you normally send correspondence?

Use the norm to gage your response.

A card with sympathies before you see your friend would also be a nice idea.

Hi:  I think I would send a Christmas card with a note saying how sorry I was to hear of her/his mother's passing and how it might be difficult for the family this holiday season.  Let them know your thoughts and prayers are with them during this time.
Something like that.

Hope this helps,
Sunny

I want to be on my best "behaviour" during the holidays, and had a related question for members.

I found out recently that a friend's mother passed away, and we haven't talked much, maybe once a year, with a couple of emails a year.

If it's 3 weeks since the passsing, should I mail a sympathy card, or a Christmas card with condolences, or telephone?
