I believe that it is the same thing that happens to pregnant women, guys.
Nicotine speeds up your digestion, and when you stop it slows way down. This is what causes both the gas and the heartburn.

In homage to my own experience in the farting olympics, I collated the three old links I could find a few days ago on the thread 'It's a dirty job but someone's got to say it...'. Will bump that shortly...
I still get fierce heartburn if I eat too much bread. If that's a problem for folks, try to avoid it for a few days and see if it helps. Methinks it's about the rate of digestion.
Happy tooting ;)

Unhooked, why do we both love these threads??? As Phil once suggested, starting up a SFC (stop farting center.)
What is all the fuss, Fussyone, have fun with it while they last...I never had that problem but you are not the first to report or brag about it. I don't think it lasts forever.

Goofy and Fussyone--I have tried this and it works! Buy some bulk Flaxseed (any supermarket, bulk store or health food store should have it, it's pretty common) and grind it up as much as possible until it's a powder. Mix 1 table spoon into a big glass of water and chug it back. It doesn't taste bad (actually kind of tastes like banana's) and this usually takes care of any heartburn or acid reflux you may get. I had severe acid reflux for a very long time before quitting smoking and this seems to help each and every time, plus it's the natural method. You may need to go to the bathroom shortly after that but it's not too bad. Oh and you can also put a little into yogurt or oatmeal and you won't taste it at all. Give it a try, it worked wonders for me.

So far seven weeks, and still "tooting my horn" so to speak. I also have heartburn. I'm convinced that this is due to my 2 pack a day habit, and my lungs are trying to heal.
The coughing stopped in the 1st week or 2, but the gas buildup continues.
I found that deep breathing helps a lot for the heartburn. I'm sure I've done so much damage to myself over 35 years of smoking, that i've got to be patient.
Hang in there, fussy. The quit is worth it.

Yes,
Your system is going through a change and it will experience many different functions :)
Give it time, and if it persists, check with your doctor to rule out anything medical :)

Hi Fussyone,
This has been the topic of many post and humorous at that. Yes this is part of quitting smoking and could last a couple of days to a few weeks. It's your bodies way of getting rid of the poison in your body from smoking. I bumped up "Excessive Gas" in the common support thread. You'll be able to laugh at this and it will pass no pun intended. Congrats on your decision to quit!!
