In Frequently asked questions, I wrote 5 questions you should ask yourself to find out what what method is right for you. Each method has its ups and downs and each method is as unique as each person is, so it really depends. Before deciding what method to use, I recommend answering the 5 questions on that thread to decide what method is best for YOU!

Good Job Dunedad
My quit was more a warm turkey rather than cold. I used the 7 mg patch lowest dosage for 2 hour per day for about 14 days. Then just quit. I chose the patch because it was a proven method and it works. I also heard of people slaping on the patch when they had to travel by air for a few hours. They swore by it and I do to. I'm not a full coward like Mr. Ed, but a half coward.

I had considerable success with patches in previous quits, until I got down to the lowest mg., then I would fall. This time I again quit with patches (an abbreviated version) and when I went to the lowest I started taking Chantix. Been on Chantix alone for almost 4 weeks... :)

Phil,
Just like you quit smoking, you can kick the gum. Just do it slowly. When you're ready, start cutting you gum in half, set a limit and by delaying your nicotine gum. Try to start using new substitutions for your nic gum, regular gum perhaps?
Hope this helps.

Ha ha Stickin! Half coward indeed.
Dunedad, Somebody here compared Cold Turkey v Patches to having a plaster on a wound. You can either rip it off quickly, or pull it off slowly. Each way has its own pros and cons.
Mr Ed :)

I used the patch system. I just felt like even though I really was ready to quit I wanted something that would help a little bit. After around 100 days I started using Zoloft an anti depressant because I was having cravings and I was sick of it. I still did not want to smoke, but didn' want to keep having cravings either. The Zoloft really helped take the edge off. I have been off the patch for a while now, but I am still on the Zoloft.

I'm doing cold turkey. I've read Alan Carr and that helped me enormously - an excellent read because it debunks so many myths surrounding smoking. Chocolate helps too as does coming here to read and post - a true godsend and I've really enjoyed the solidarity shared by everyone here.
But the bottom line with my quit is that I don't want to smoke - I'm 36 years old and I smoked since I was 16!!! I would love to experience what it is like to have a healthy body at least once in my life - I cant remember the feeling and at my age I feel that has to change. Central to achieving this feeling is stopping smoking - I can eat all the vegetables I want and exercise every day of the week but if I continue to smoke I will never ever be healthy. So they are out and they are staying out.
Thanks for this post - it has allowed me to restate some important things about my quit.

I tried hypnosis and so far it has worked. I have had no nicotine withdrawals at all. I hardly can believe it. So far so good. I even went with some friends Fri. evening for a drink and most of them smoked and I still didn't want one. So far so good. I now consider myself a non-smoker.
